Join the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for a special event in honor of Earl Lewis for receiving the prestigious National Humanities Medal.
Professor Lewis will be joined by Ford School Dean Celeste Watkins-Hayes for a conversation on his scholarship in justice and equity, contributions to the field of black history, and vision for the future of diversity in academia and the U.S.
The National Humanities Medal, inaugurated in 1997, honors individuals or groups whose work has deepened the nation’s understanding of the humanities, and broadened citizens’ engagement with history, literature, languages, philosophy and other humanities subjects.
Professor Lewis is the first U-M faculty member to receive this award. He was presented the award by President Joe Biden during a White House ceremony on March 21, 2023 for, as President Biden said, “writing America’s history and shaping America’s future.”
Earl Lewis is the Thomas C. Holt Distinguished University Professor of History, Afroamerican and African Studies, and Public Policy at the University of Michigan, and founding director of the Center for Social Solutions.
Following the conversation, all are invited to join for a reception in honor of Professor Lewis’ award.
