Departments across campus are coming together to put on an interdisciplinary service design weekend. Public Service Design organizes how people, processes, and tools come together to provide government services.
The weekend begins on Friday, March 27, 1-5pm at the Ford School with Years Ahead. This event, hosted by the Better Government Lab, Urban Technology at Taubman, and State Capacity AI, provides students with an opportunity to learn directly from practitioners who built the first generation of digital government.
Directly following Years Ahead, is a Networking Reception in the Great Hall from 5-6pm, hosted by the Kohn Collaborative for Social Policy. Throughout this reception, students and practitioners will have the chance to reflect on the Years Ahead event, pose questions about working in the civic tech/service design sector, and engage in small group conversations with leaders in these fields.
Saturday's day-long workshop (10 am-3:30pm), Transforming Government Services with Human Centered Design, is hosted by Poverty Solutions and facilitated by John Buckley and Pallavi Rawla of the Public Policy Lab Midwest. This workshop will provide U-M students, faculty, and staff with a comprehensive introduction to applying human-centered innovation approaches in the public sector. PPL's workshop will allow attendees – future policymakers, technologists, data analysts, engineers, civil servants, and social workers – to not only understand this framework, but also gain invaluable experience bridging academic silos. This event is co-sponsored by Business+Impact at Ross, Better Government Lab, Urban Technology at Taubman, Engaged Learning Office at UMSI, and Community Change at Social Work.
All events require registration and the Saturday 3/28 workshop requires an application (due by 3/23 at 12pm), as spots are limited.
