The Role of the Private Sector in K-12 Public Education

Abstract:

The challenges facing K-12 public education systems in Michigan and throughout the U.S. are formidable, and seem to grow more complex by the day. Issues related to globalization, federal oversight through the No Child Left Behind law, unfunded state mandates, aging infrastructure, and many more, are putting pressure on K-12 public school systems even while calls to improve student achievement and public education accountability grow from all quarters. Increasingly, public school systems are looking to partner with private sector entities to help address these challenges.

A panel of distinguished education and private sector leaders will gather to discuss the role of the private sector in K-12 public education, from a variety of viewpoints. Panelists include Michael Flanagan, Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Michigan; Frederick Hess, Director of Education Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute; JD Hoye, President of the National Academy Foundation; and Sanford I. Weill, Chairman Emeritus of Citigroup Inc. Deborah Loewenberg Ball, Dean of the U-M School of Education, will serve as discussant. Professor Brian Jacob will serve as moderator.
