Ruth Browne will describe the various initiatives that the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health has undertaken to promote community empowerment and better health outcomes for urban, underserved populations. She will discuss how the Institute's work is making important contributions to demonstrating how the health care delivery system can work effectively with partners in the community to address issues associated with health equity including prevention, healthy community options, and policies that support investment in the social determinants of health.

From the speaker's bio: 

Dr. Ruth C. Browne (MPP/MPH '83) is CEO of the Arthur Ashe Institute for Urban Health. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Center of Health Care Strategies and served as a member of the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) Director's Council of Public Representatives (COPR) for four years. She is an active member of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women (NCBW) Manhattan Chapter. Dr. Browne received her doctorate from the School of Public Health at Harvard University and a Masters in Public Health and a Masters in Public Policy from the University of Michigan. She received a bachelor's degree from Princeton University and pursued lower undergraduate studies at the University of the West Indies in Jamaica. 

This event is part of the University of Michigan's 29th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Symposium and is co-sponsored by the Center for Public Policy in Diverse Societies and the Gilbert S. Omenn and Martha A. Darling Health Policy Fund.
