John Ciorciari was quoted in a Voice of America article about political pressures on the UN-backed Khmer Rouge Tribunal.
Legal observers are concerned about the disagreement between the UN and Cambodian investigating judges and the international co-prosecutor about whether to move forward with Cases 003 and 004. The concern is that public discourse, especially from members of the Cambodian government, may harm the legitimacy of the tribunal.
"If Cases 003 and 004 are indeed dismissed, Case 002 can still proceed, but it will be tainted by the public knowledge that the tribunal is subject to tight political control and even instances of blatant interference," Ciorciari told Voice of America.
