Helen Levy spoke with Michigan Radio to discuss the health insurance exchanges currently being set up in Michigan under the Affordable Care Act.
"The health insurance exchanges are part of the strategy for expanding coverage to the uninsured," said Levy, a research associate professor at the Ford School and the School of Public Health. "So, the exchanges are intended to make it easier for people who don't have access to employer sponsored coverage to buy non-group health coverage."
Levy, who served on President Obama's Council of Economic Advisers in 2010-11, addressed how Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has supported the exchanges, in spite of court challenges to the act, which President Obama signed in March 2011.
"I think the Governor has been exactly right to say this is a good thing to move forward with," Levy said. "Even if there were no Affordable Care Act it would make sense for us to be setting up an exchange that people could access."
