Susan M. Collins was quoted in a CNNMoney article, "Four downsides of a chattier Fed," explaining why more communication from the Federal Reserve hasn't always added clarity.
One concern outlined by the author, Annalyn Kurtz, is the whether the data-driven Fed gives mixed signals when the data is mixed, such as in the latest GDP report that showed the pace of economic growth isn't matching that of job growth. These mixed signals could lead to mixed viewpoints from the 12 bank presidents, and concern about market reactions.
"Markets need to understand that they should expect a wider range of views on the committee in coming months," Collins told CNNMoney. "My hope is that markets don't overreact to that."
