Bike sharing research by Hampshire wins EURO Award

June 26, 2019

Robert Hampshire was part of the author team that won the EURO Award for the Best EJOR Paper announced today during the annual European Conference on Operational Research in Dublin. Conveyed by EURO, the Association of European Operational Research Societies, to the best paper published by the European Journal of Operational Research, the award recognizes the innovative applications of operational research in the paper titled “Inventory rebalancing and vehicle routing in bike sharing systems.”

In the paper published in March 2017, Jasper Schuijbroek (School of Industrial Engineering, Eindhoven), Hampshire, and William J. van Hoeve (Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University) determine the service level requirements at bike sharing stations and design the optimal vehicle routes to redistribute the bike inventory across the stations.

The research used empirical data from Boston’s Hubway and Washington D.C.’s Capital Bike Share to find more efficient ways to redistribute bikes across the systems, which can be applied to the more than 1,000 active bike share systems around the world.

The paper was presented during the closing session of the EURO 2019 conference and will be made available for download for free for a limited time on EJOR.
