The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), John Ratcliffe, recently announced that he would not be briefing Congress in person about security threats to the upcoming elections. Javed Ali, Ford School Towsley Policymaker in Residence, writes in The Hill, that limiting the briefings will hinder congressional efforts to understand the threats and work to remedy them, if necessary.
Noting that the National Counterintelligence and Security Center recently reported that foreign states will continue to use covert and overt measures to sway the election, he writes, “Now is the time for Congress and the executive branch to work together... Restoring the full spectrum of ODNI-led briefings to Congress can play a large role in ensuring that this year’s elections are not tainted by our adversaries’ attempts to influence the outcome.”
