Installations at the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA) and the Duderstadt Center (the Dude) on North Campus are aimed at increasing voter turnout among U-M students. The spaces were designed by the Creative Campus Voting Project, a non-partisan initiative based at the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design, working in conjunction with the Ann Arbor City Clerk’s Office. Students, staff, faculty, and the community can all take advantage of these voting hubs. Students from across campus, including the Ford School’s Hannah Jatsch (BA ‘24), Isabelle Schindler (BA ‘23), Mark Kava (BA ‘23), and Mlaika Azhar (BA ‘24), work as UMICH Votes Fellows at the sites to welcome voters and help them navigate the process.
"The peer mentors, together with the informational messaging and vibrant visuals threaded throughout the spaces, aim to educate and energize college-age voters," says Stamps School professor Hannah Smotrich, one of the creators of the project.
Another of the creators is Stamps School professor, Stephanie Rowden. She told WEMU, “We’re designing an experience that we hope is welcoming, clear, nonpartisan, and maybe even a little joyful and delightful.” The project attracted 5,000 new voters at UMMA in 2020, she said.
