The Ford School of Public Policy names Katie Hyland (MPP ‘24) as the 2022 Gerald R. Ford Presidential Fellow. Honoring the legacy of President Ford, fellows are chosen for their commitment to bipartisan cooperation and civility, engagement in community service, and intention to pursue a career in the public sector. Hyland will receive full tuition, a generous stipend, internship funding, and additional professional development opportunities.
Hyland graduated with a BA in English and Economics from Georgetown University and served as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Kolkata, India. Following graduation, Hyland worked at American Institutes for Research, on projects related to early childhood education, higher education, and federal accountability. Specifically, she supported a research-practice partnership in Flint, Michigan, serving as a local evaluator for the Educare Flint and Cummings Great Expectations preschools. She worked closely with local stakeholders and led the collection and analysis of student social-emotional data to help teachers track their students’ needs over time. Hyland has also contributed to multiple reports for the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences on schools identified for support under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).
“While at the Ford School, I’m excited to further hone my skills in quantitative and qualitative analysis, so that I can be more thoughtful and nimble in developing research to serve communities,” Hyland said.
The Gerald R. Ford Presidential Fellowship is an endowed fellowship given to the Ford School’s most exceptional applicants. Fellows exemplify President Ford’s commitment to bipartisan cooperation and civility, are deeply and positively engaged in community service, and intend to pursue a lifelong career in the public sector. These fellows have gone on to build their own legacies and serve our state and nation by analyzing issues creatively and objectively, identifying actionable policy solutions, and building bipartisan consensus.
