As December rolls around, thanks to Spotify Wrapped and American's love for sharing on social media, people are reminded of everyone's top music choices for the year. Whether it's an indie-folk spunky cousin or disco loving grandma, it seems like everyone's been sharing a review of their music taste this year.
Marketplace sought economists for insight on an issue that might have had just as large of an impact on Americans as Taylor Swift did this year, the job market. So, how would economists classify the 2024 job market in musical terms? The Ford School's Betsey Stevenson said the addition of 2 million jobs and increased wages made her think of the Demi Lovato hit "Confident." Aligning with the songs lyrics, Stevenson described the 2024 job market as "underrated" by the American public though she is not 100% "confident" the job market will remain strong in 2025.
A top hit from Kendrick Lamar in 2024, "Not Like Us," was cited by economist Stephen Juneau for America's comparatively impressive unemployment rate globally, hinting to other countries that did not match up.
