Letter from Dean Watkins-Hayes

May 7, 2025

Dear Fordies, IPPSters, and friends,

Gerald R. Ford once said, “The global economy requires an unprecedented grasp of diverse viewpoints and cultural traditions.” This sentiment is woven throughout and embedded in who we are and what we do at the Ford School.

We value community, integrity, respect, service, inclusion, diversity, and equity. These principles guide us as we engage deeply with the complexities of public policy, ensuring that our efforts are inclusive and impactful in a continually evolving environment.

We dedicate ourselves to cultivating a comprehensive understanding of public policy that integrates a range of perspectives. We continue to think through, in a nuanced way, how to develop and implement policies that ensure benefits across populations. We are committed to caring for each other, our communities, and the public good as we address the pressing challenges of our interconnected world.

In this edition of State & Hill, we acknowledge dramatic changes and uncertainty at the federal level by tapping into the expertise of four faculty experts who, in their own words, contextualize some of the key issues. You can also read an interview with Director of Career Services Peter Vasher, who has been closely following how changes affect our students and alumni.

Importantly, this edition also focuses on the profound impact that policy professionals make at the state and local levels. Read about alumni and students making a difference in places like San José, South Bend, and New York City. Like so many in our community, they work to improve government effectiveness and create safer, more vibrant communities across the United States.

We truly have an amazing community. I am incredibly grateful for your partnership and dedication as we prepare leaders ready to face the future with integrity and a committed spirit of public service.

Warmly,

Signature of Celeste Watkins-Hayes
