Children of the Dream: Why School Integration Works with Associate Professor Rucker C. Johnson

Please join us for a book talk by Rucker C. Johnson (MA '97 Econ, PhD '02 Econ), Associate Professor & NBER, University of California, Berkeley & Goldman School of Public Policy. The book, Children of the Dream: Why School Integration Works, draws on longitudinal studies going back to the 1960s and shows that students who attended integrated and well-funded schools were more successful in life than those who did not - and this held true for children of all races. Throughout winter semester, Ford School staff are invited to attend a new series of workshop conversations that explore inclusive workplace practices. Remaining sessions of the DEI Professional Development Series explore:

Reflection Space
As the academic school years comes to a close, remember the Ford School’s Reflection Space is available for use! The Reflection Space was designed to support an inclusive environment and is available for silent/quiet individual reflection, meditation, prayer, and contemplation.

The space is located in Weill Hall on the 5th-floor hallway that runs east-west from the main staircase and is available for use by Ford School faculty, staff, and students.

Space Use Guidelines:

  • Usage is limited to 20-minutes. Please adhere to the time limit so other individuals can utilize the space as needed.
  • Be mindful of how you use the space for reflection, meditation, prayer, etc… purposes. The space is designed for quiet use only.
  • The space can be used by individuals who wish to engage in structured or unstructured reflection.
  • Users should return the space to the original set up.
  • Room furnishings must remain in the space. Do not remove any items from the space.
  • No organized services are permitted in the space.
  • Sleeping or studying is not permitted in the space.
  • Use of electronic devices (e.g., computers, cell phone, tablets, etc…) should be limited to support quiet reflection. If used, the volume of headphones should be low enough to avoid disturbing others in the space.
  • No food or beverages are permitted in the space.
  • No candles, incense burning or other smoke, fume, fragrance or flame-inducing elements are allowed.

    Come learn about on-campus wellness resources, connect with community providers, or participate in a few de-stressing activities like yoga and coloring.

    Panel Discussion & Breakout Session
    Join us for a panel discussion and breakout session surrounding the intersection of mental health and diversity, led by students and faculty sharing their expert knowledge & personal experiences. Food will be provided!

    Social Worth Affirmation with Julia Lee

     

    Teams often fail to reach their potential because each member’s need to feel accepted prevents him or her from offering their unique perspective or information to the team. Drawing on self-affirmation theory, Julia Lee, assistant professor of Management and Organizations at the Ross School of Business, propose that social worth affirmation, defined as the process by which an individual’s unique contributions are affirmed by social relationships - can prepare individuals to contribute to team performance more effectively.     Trans Visibility Passport Day with The Spectrum Center and School of Social Work

     

    The Spectrum Center and the School of Social Work Office of Global Activities are collaborating to host Trans Visibility Passport Day. During this event you may apply for and/or renew a passport, request a name change and/or update your gender marker with the Washtenaw County Clerk's office. NEWS AND UPDATES

  • Rackham Professional Development DEI Certificate. Are you a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow interested in earning a certificate during your studies? Consider The Rackham Professional Development DEI Certificate! This FREE program, which will be offered again fall semester, is designed to prepare participants to work in a diverse environment while fostering a climate of inclusivity. The application form will go live in mid-August and close in late September. For details and workshop descriptions visit the Rackham Graduate School site.
  • Did you know April is National Arab American Heritage Month (NAAHM)? This month is an opportunity to celebrate the heritage and culture as well as recognize the achievements of Arab Americans. Since arriving in the US in the 1800s, they have left an indelible mark on many aspects of American society. U-M began its commemoration of NAAHM in mid-February and will continue with programs for students and the public through mid-April. For more information visit the MESA site.
