Research conducted by Sarah Cohodes on Massachusetts charter schools shows that "charter schools in urban areas, including Boston, do a great job boosting test scores, and the ones outside of those urban areas, tended to have no impact on test scores or sometimes negative impacts." Regarding college enrollment, Cohodes stated "both urban and non-urban schools induced students to go to college, but the non-urban schools… actually increase college going rates and college graduation rates by about 10 percentage points... the urban charters also boosted college graduation by almost 5 percentage points… so I think in both cases these are big and meaningful effects."
