U.S. President elect Donald Trump has recently threatened to impose 100% tariffs on countries working to replace the U.S. dollar in international trade transactions. The Ford School's Alan Deardorff informed BBC Brasil that "If Trump uses all the tariffs he has mentioned, there is a risk of cutting the United States off from the world economy to some extent and making the dollar less useful to other countries. That could reduce dependence on the dollar, which is exactly what he says he doesn't want to happen." Deardorff hints to BBC Brasil that these tariffs are unlikely stating, "Trump has a history of actually using tariffs, and he did so very dramatically in his first term. But he also uses threats to try to get responses from other countries, I think in this case (of BRICS) it is more likely that this will happen."
