The Ford School's new Online Master of Public Affairs (MPA) program is opening more doors for Detroit-area professionals, made possible by a generous $400,000 commitment from The Skillman Foundation. This funding ensures that Detroiters and those with ties to Metro Detroit will have access to expanded financial support as they pursue their public policy education.
Dean Celeste Watkins-Hayes reflected on the impact of The Skillman Foundation's commitment: "Many of our Online MPA students balance careers and deep-rooted service to their communities. With this support, Detroiters can access a world-class public policy education while continuing to lead and serve where they are most needed."
Launched in January 2026, the Ford School's Online MPA program is designed for mid-career professionals with at least five years of policy-related experience. The program helps participants strengthen leadership, analytical, and communication skills while remaining active in their current roles. This month, the inaugural cohort of 22 students began their studies—representing fields such as government, higher education, health care, law enforcement, the military, and the private sector.
"There's nothing more powerful than homegrown solutions," said Sarida Scott, Vice President, Program, The Skillman Foundation. "Supporting Detroiters to earn a Master of Public Affairs degree is an investment in local leaders and their ability to enact real change."
