The Weiser Diplomacy Center in collaboration with The University of Virginia National Security Policy Center and Meridian International Center will host a forum that will engage policymakers, military officials, academic experts, diplomats and other thought leaders to examine challenges and opportunities at the intersection of defense and diplomacy during this crucial transitional period in Afghanistan.

Roger Lu Phillips, Legal Director at the Syria Justice and Accountability Centre, will discuss SJAC's work supporting Universal Jurisdiction prosecutions in Europe as well as its work ascertaining the fate of Syrian victims who have been detained or gone missing during the conflict.

Leading scholars from Africa and Latin America will share insights about macro-level commonalities in transitional justice processes across diverse societies.

Victoria Pebbles, Program Director at Great Lakes Commission, will host this environmental policy simulation focused on the challenges and potential solutions to managing invasive mussels that have blanketed large portions of the North American Great Lakes.

Facilitated by Ginsberg Center staff, this interactive workshop introduces principles and practices for thoughtfully engaging with communities, including motivations, the impact of social identities, and strategies for engaging in reciprocal, ethical, and respectful ways. 

The event will feature distinguished leaders in the field of workforce development and economic mobility including a keynote address from Walmart's Greg Foran, US President and CEO and Julie Gehrki, Vice President of Philanthropy, and closing remarks from Garlin Gilchrist, Lieutenant Governor of the State of Michigan.

This series will use CRT to foster a dialogue on important issues of U.S. public policy ranging from activism to the gentrification of physical spaces to inequalities in health and health care.

On February 23, the Ford School will host graduate students from 14 univerisities to participate in the 2019 NASPAA-Batten Student Simulation Competition. This year’s competition—a partnership between the University of Virginia Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy and the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA)—will connect a record 585 students from 11 global host sites including Dhaka, Cairo, Mexico City, and San Francisco to tackle policy issues associated with forced migration through computer-based simulated game play.

Languages use different systems for classifying nouns. Gender languages assign many — sometimes all — nouns to distinct sex-based categories, masculine and feminine. We construct a new data set, documenting this property for more than four thousand languages which together account for more than 99 percent of the world’s population.
